I am playing as rome obviously and am at war with one of the gallic tribes. Your best bet is to use them defensivley as a front line. Instead, it was decreed that soldiers would join the legion as a career, rather than as service to the city, and would all be equipped as heavy infantry with the same state-purchased equipment. I don't bother wasting money on Hastati and Principes, they fight poorly and rout easily. They are equipped with a sword, a bronze helmet, a large shield, and chain armor.
