I'd recomend upgrading your fields of mars barraks early in the game so you can access the much stronger principas and triarri. The Principes have the same helmets, same shields, same swords, and same pilum as Hastati.

Having your main core units attack in one huge group is inneffective and will force them to route since they will lose moral very quickly. Once your Hastati have tired then start moving in your higher class infantry so they will be fresh for combat.

As to your better troops, short swords can beat them if they are charging (barbarians get a hefty charge bonus that increases their melee attack and melee damage) or if they outnumber you.
Given how slow the transportation system is, and how little the difference is between the two, I just build Hastati until the Marian Reforms.
Since you mention custom battle you can have custom armies with custom battlefield, which you can save if you want to play it more than once and you even choose how many armies there is on the battlefield in total (2vs2 or 4vs4).

The base stats on Short swords are almost exactly on par (and actually costs more) with Hastati, so it makes sense for Hastati to break even or lose to them depending on how the Hastati and Short Swords are used. I thought it was pretty funny, seeing as a noob circle is generally seen as "invulnerable.

You only need a Town (2000) to train Hastati but a Small City (8000) to train Principes. Valve Corporation. It's sometimes best to turn off their missile fire to avoid friendly fire and uncontrolled volleys.
I think you're gonna to like the imperial campaign with very hard settings for both battle and on the campaign map, because that was I did almost a week ago and this is my story report of an oddity in Rome Total War.

I am playing as rome obviously and am at war with one of the gallic tribes. Your best bet is to use them defensivley as a front line. Instead, it was decreed that soldiers would join the legion as a career, rather than as service to the city, and would all be equipped as heavy infantry with the same state-purchased equipment. I don't bother wasting money on Hastati and Principes, they fight poorly and rout easily. They are equipped with a sword, a bronze helmet, a large shield, and chain armor.
Due to their defense these units are more reliable and difficult to rout than the Hastati. Leves had been replaced with velites, who had a similar role but were now also attached to principes and triarii.

Hastati appear to have been remnants of the old third class of the army under the Etruscan kings when it was reformed by Marcus Furius Camillus. Can a timeseries with a clear trend be considered stationary? The only visual difference is their armor.
